És de Texas i va estudiar Literatura Anglesa i Francesa a Princeton, i espanyol a Salamanca. Més endavant, va treballar en diverses editorials grans nord-americanes. Mentre vivia al segon pis d’un bloc d’apartaments, Katharine somiava gratacels… Així que es va decidir a escriure La planta mil, la seva primera novel·la.
